Prize Hamburger

Prize Hamburger

I was raised mainly on Suty's Ranch in Malin Oregon. That’s where I got the stories of wild pigs, and some of the best times of my younger life.

One year the boss, “Tony Suty”, bought a prize Brahma Bull from Texas, and we picked it up at the rail station in Klamath Falls Oregon. We loaded the bull and hauled it all the way to Langell Valley, where we unloaded it. With the horses, we pushed him to the herd that Tony had there, and that’s also when we found out that the bull was a little rank.

Tony bragged for weeks about this expensive prize bull that he bought from the bad lands of Texas, and the great small calves he would produce. The smaller the calf, the easier it is for the first time heifers to have, and therefor, the higher the percentage of cows living.

Everyone sure wanted to see this prize bull, but it wouldn’t be until breeding season was over and we separated the herd, and brought the bulls back to Malin.

Dad and I went to Langell Valley to check on the herd, and we went through the pastures with the old 51 Chevy Pick Up we called old blue, because of the color.

We found the herd in the back field, but the prize Brahma was way off by himself. The other bulls had pushed him out of the herd, so dad and I proceeded to push him back with old blue. That worked real well until we got close to the herd, and one of the bulls met the Brahma.

The prize bull refused to be pushed anymore, and he turned on us. He came at the truck full speed and headed straight for the driver's door. Dad scooted way over as the bull caved it in. Then he went out and made another turn, and came at us again. Old Blue had died and wouldn’t start.
The bull charged the second time, and was headed for the driver's door, when dad pulled the 30-30 off the rack and shot the bull. It fell to the ground not even three feet from the pick up. Dad finally said in a calm voice, “well Sh_ _, that’s really going to piss Tony off." It did, but what else could be done?

We all teased Tony after that, about all that prize hamburger he bought! It was 15 to 20 years later before Tony found any humor in it at all.

Prize Hamburger : )

My aunt had a ranch and I remember having to throw slop to the pigs and help milk the cows when I stayed with her. For a city girl, it was pretty scary, gross stuff!! Nothing like that bull though! I loved your dad's reaction!! Such simple words that gave me such laughter. I can even see it happening. Gotta love those ranches. I know I loved the visits.
