What Are The Highest Paying Oilfield Jobs?
With the price of oil being what it is nowadays oil and gas drilling companies are paying some pretty good wages to workers. Which jobs pay the most and where are they located?
The top pay on an oil rig site usually goes to a consultant, also known as a "company man". Rates for consultants go from $500 per day to $5000 or more. Years of experience in the drilling business are needed to become a consultant. He or she works for the oil company that has hired the rig to drill the well and is in charge of how that well will be drilled. Next in line is the "toolpusher" that works for the company that owns the rig. His responsibility is for the oil rig workers and keeping the rig running. The driller is the highest paid member of the rig crew. He usually makes five to ten dollars more per hour than the roughnecks. The driller operates the rig and is the leader of the roughnecks or crew.
Floor hands, or roughnecks that work on the drilling rig floor are next in line. They may make $20 to $40 per hour or even more on offshore rigs.
At the low end of the spectrum are the roustabouts. Roustabouts are semi-skilled laborers who perform functions such as sandblasting, painting, loading pipe, etc. They may make $10 an hour and up, depending on whether they are on land or offshore. Offshore pay is almost always higher than land rates.
Then there are the service companies. Service companies provide myriad of services on an oil rig, from formulating drilling mud to geology type work (mudlogging).
Some service hands make more than even the toolpusher. An oilfield "fishing hand", whose job it is to operate specialized equipment that retrieves lost items and pipe from the well bore may make $1000 per day or more if he is highly skilled.
Oilfield salaries all come down to skill and skilled employees are rewarded generously. Usually the only way to acquire that skill is to spend years working your way up the ladder. A lowly roustabout may someday become a highly paid toolpusher if he works his way up the ladder.
