Xomba Blog: Turkey Day Spectacular

Xomba Blog: Turkey Day Spectacular

13
points

If you live in the US chances are your having dinner with friends and/or family. Odds are even better you'll be eating turkey today and watching the Macy's day parade.

Right now I am in the car with my girlfriend traveling to family in Georgia about a 2 hour drive through the middle of nowhere.

I wanted to post a blog yesterday, but since I am in the car traveling I might as well do it now.

Many of you will go shopping tomorrow in a frenzy that has only been seen in nature twice. The other is when sharks smell blood and start attacking everything. I'm not sure what motivates people to get up at 2am and stand in line to have that extra special something that will probably be marked down further after the holidays. Personally, we're finding tons of deals on sites like www.tigerdirect.com, www.buy.com and www.woot.com.

Jeremy tells me that the Macy's parade Rickroll'd everyone today.

If you're not sure what it means to be rickroll'd you can read about it here.

No matter what you do this weekend be safe and remember to give thanks for still being able to afford an internet connection.

To our Indian friends we hope you stay safe and we extend our condolences for the recent attacks in Mumbai.

Take care!

Giving thanks daily

Drive safe Nick.

Personally, I don't celebrate Thanksgiving for religious reasons. However, I do thank God every single day. I think we all need to remember to thank God for everything we have or if we "think" we don't have anything, thank God for the abilities to talk, walk, see, hear, etc. We should not limit our thanks to only one day a year.

@Life-is-sw.--'Day of Focus' Doesn't Ban Thanks from Other Days!

If I say tomorrow is Friday-Day, does that mean there can never be another Friday again until next year?

Think!

Mythman, point taken, but my

Mythman, point taken, but my point still stands. I still think Thanksgiving is over emphasized. People should give thanks on a daily basis, they don't need a specific day of the year where they give "more" thanks. Most holidays now consist of feasting and sales, the original point of each American holiday is lost. I am not saying people shouldn't celebrate or have family gatherings during these holidays, but I think the extras such as way overemphasized sales make the holiday lose its meaning.

As a Muslim I celebrate two holidays a year. No birthdays, anniversaries, valentine, mothers day, fathers day, etc. Just two holidays: Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha. These days have been celebrated just about the same way for as long as I can remember. There are no sales or anything of that nature. Number one thing in our Agenda during these holidays is what we do everyday: pray. We go to pray, then we visit families all over, and finally we go home to our own families. These are days of celebration and each holiday has an origin that has not dissolved over the centuries.

Attitude of Gratitude

life-is-sweet> i understand what you say. One can say thanks for so many things each day every time.

But rituals do have their strong points. Perhaps they inculcate habits into us that goads us to do good. Even if it is for a ritual. May be one day we can do away with the ritual and do good anyways. Then you may not need the ritual as a prop. Just my thoughts

Happy Turkey day

Wish you all a happy thanksgiving and hope you enjoyed your dinners, but thanks for also remembering that while you all were celebrating thanksgiving in the US and the rest of the world, Mumbai was and still is under the siege of terrorists and for the first time I think Mumbai has been really shaken up and brought to a complete standstill on Thanksgiving day.

The encounters with the terrorists at all the three places are still going strong and nobody knows how long this will last. It could turn out to be a repeat of what happened at Akshardham, say some of the Army personnel. If you remember, there too only two terrorists had managed to take hostages inside the temple and had held on for more than two weeks engaged in battle with the soldiers and police.

Apparently, these people are well stocked with provisions that they had bought from the Colaba Market two days prior to the attacks, worth 50,000 Rs.

The situation is really grim as the people of Mumbai are witnessing a real war like scenario for probably the first time in their lives, as all the navy, army and police personnel have taken total control over the three buildings and the surrounding areas.

I just hope that the people (and politicians in particular) will remember this for a long time to come and probably learn to give more respect to the people of the defense forces, and all other such personnel who are uniformed and lay their lives for the safety of the general public (and the same politicians who actually don't deserve a drop of blood to be shed for their miserable lives!)

@Prabhjeet-Life-is-sweet--Synchronizing Our Celebration-Clocks

That's why we have holidays ... to kinda train ourselves in 'appropriateness.'

(sort of an 'everybody's doin` it'-reminder ... 'everybody's' awake when the sun is shining; 'everybody's' bundled up in the winter months; etc.)

In the weeks leading up to Xmas--for example--it's more-appropriate to mob around the neighbor singing Xmas xarols ('♫Joy to the world, `Cause Ab-mox said ...♫') than it is the 11 other months of the year.

Sure, you can walk around proclaiming Xryst all you want, but people don't "expect" you to unless it's Xmas!

Prabhjeet, I agree rituals,

Prabhjeet, I agree rituals, traditions, culture, etc are very hard to change. I am not trying to change anyone's tradition or holidays, on the contrary, I respect everyone's holidays. I was pointing out how lost the original meanings of most holidays has become.

There are many rituals or culture in different parts around the world. It might not be easy to do away with them, but it will take time for people to get used to the change if any occurs.

Mytham, we don't need

Mytham, we don't need holidays to set us in the right directions or show us how to act and when to do so. These things are just there for convenience, not because they are needed. How did people manage long before holidays became known? I don't need mothers day to remind me of my duty to my mother and how much she has sacrificed for me. Like wise, I don't need valentines day to see how much people love me, vise versa.

@Life-is-sweet--Think of 'Holidays' as a Social Metronome

Turn on a metronome, set it for the right speed and listen for 3 tics, and you don't NEED to be reminded how fast that speed is.

Then walk in with the rest of the orchestra, and play your song at your right speed; if your 'right speed' isn't the orchestra's 'right speed,' I'm SURE the orchestra will understand that you're just a little 'different' and that the resulting cacophony of your performance with them is just a 'celebration of life' (`errrrr sumthin`).

And I'm SURE audiences who thought they were going to hear a well-rehearsed performance will applaud wildly in satisfaction at the fact that they're actually getting a random caterwaul of 'induhviduals' crowded together.

Personally (whether playing or listening), I prefer synchronicity---each instrument playing its part in accord with the masters' plan relative to all the other parts.

I don't mean to say you should clip all the strings and de-head the drums and de-bar the xylophones and melt the brass and burn the woodwinds when the metronome's NOT clicking, but--living among people--you FOCUS on 'the type of music the people play'.
